JOHN HAMBRICK [Anchor]:   This week, Ralph Penza has been profiling neighborhoods where the quality of life is good because of the determination of the folks who live there. Well, tonight, Ralph wraps up that series with a visit to a spot that once made the news for the wrong reasons. Ralph?

RALPH PENZA:   Well, John, this neighborhood story is about children and the way parents and children in Kew Gardens, Queens, rallied behind their local school; rallied to give their children an important educational tool. It's a story happening in a neighborhood that once drew national attention; the kind of attention nobody wants.

[Voice over as videotape begins]  It's been 20 years since Kitty Genovese was murdered in Queens while residents watched from their windows but did not help her. What became a national symbol of public apathy happened near the train station in Kew Gardens.

Today the residents of Kew Gardens say that tragic incident involving a few people was never the true picture of their neighborhood; a place, they say, of caring people; caring especially for children.
