SHEILA STEINFELD:   Sure do.

RALPH PENZA:   [Voice over]  For Bernie Levine, the neighborhood support for the kids at P.S. 99 was no surprise. In his candy store, for over 50 years, Bernie and his father before him have greeted generations of families that grew up and stayed in Kew Gardens.

BERNIE LEVINE:   In some cases, the fourth generation's been coming in: grandparents, parents, children, grandchldren.

PHILLIP LIOTTA   Sometimes when it's so obvious, you don't see it. [Teacher speaking to students about computer syntax errors]

RALPH PENZA:   [Voice over]  Phil Liotta teaches the computer class. He's worked in many schools in many neighborhoods. The people in Kew Gardens, he says, are special.

PHILLIP LIOTTA:   I think it's great. Our community has always been that, whether it was the computer or a safety problem, they're here for us.

RALPH PENZA:   [Voice over]  The weeks and months and years of effort by the parents in the neighborhood shines now through the children
