Borough Hall
Queens County's first two Borough Halls were rented commercial properties in Long Island City. The third now stands at Queens Boulevard and Union Turnpike. Mayor LaGuardia laid the cornerstone on August 16, 1940 while Queens Borough President George Upton Harvey pledged:
"There will be no welcome mat for Communists, Fascists or any other un-American groups in this building while I am here."
Harvey lost his bid for re-election less than 3 months later.
