83rd Avenue

This is the same intersection shown in the last picture, but from a different perspective. Here, the view is from 83rd Avenue looking south toward the intersection of Metropolitan Avenue and 118th Street. Metropolitan Avenue (then called the Williamsburgh & Jamaica Turnpike) runs left to right, but is mostly hidden by the elevated terrain. The street running off into the distance is today's 118th Street. When this c. 1900 picture was taken, 83rd Avenue was called Hillside Avenue (different from the Hillside Avenue we know today).Later, its name was changed to Richmond Hill Avenue. The corner house in the distance became the site of the old Salty Dog Restaurant.
