La France

This apartment building is located on the north side of Metropolitan Avenue between Lefferts Boulevard and 83rd Avenue. When it first opened, it was called the Kew Gardens Apartments.  At some point, it turned away from the decidedly English style of so many of the building and street names here; and it adopted its current name, La France. The construction of apartments was a source of great contention in Kew Gardens' early days between the developer (the Kew Gardens Corporation) which wanted them, and the homeowners (represented by the Kew Gardens Civic Association which didn't. The developer eventually prevailed.
