The Bergen House

By TESS BERGEN FRIEDMAN

My family lived in this house at 83-26 Abingdon Road in Kew Gardens from 1945 to 1973. Bennie - the Kew Gardens handy man and Mr. Fixit - lived with us for 20 years. I remember there used to be a forest across the street where my brother and I went sledding.

The Interlude Cafe is where my parents had their business from 1948 through approximately 1960. They had a pearl stringing and knotting business in that building which was very convenient for me coming home from PS99 every day. I'm sure if you look in the basement of the Cafe you will still find some beads there! My father then moved the business to Jamaica Avenue.
