Roger:
Long time no see. I guess that I was a couple of years older than you and that you and my brother Paul were friends.
I remember well Janet and Monroe. It's been a long time.

I now divide my time between Manhattan --- the Berkshires ---,and Melbourne Beach, Florida.
But part of me will always remain in Kew Gardens ! What a great site this is... It just keeps getting better and better.
By the way, does anyone here have fond memories of Jahn's Ice Cream Parlor in Richmond Hill? How great was THAT place? Remember they had a "monkey" hanging over the ice cream fountain with a banana in his hand?
Also, does anyone remember a small soda fountain that was at the eastern end of Talbot Street?
I sure would love to hear from any of my old Kew Gardens friends.

To Roger Sabo.
Did you sent all of the pages from the Sage yearbook? I am not seeing alot of faces from the class of 57. Thank you for the pictures that you did send. It was great to remember the classmates from then.

"Whoops, there goes another rubber tree plant!" with the demise of Simonson's Funeral Home - a landmark if there ever was one in the Richmond Hill/Kew Gardens area.
You have to admit though, that the demolition photo looks a little funny with the house coming down and the awning still standing in the front.
It's a sad commentary for the community, and what makes it even more so is the fact that it will probably be replaced with another 'generic brick box' for multiple occupancy!
It's beginning to look as though all that will be left some day will be photographs of what was the grand old village of Kew Gardens!
But, as they say; "That's progress"!
An interesting aside; don't quote me on this but I believe Estee Lauder of cosmetic fame once lived along Hillside Avenue very near Lefferts Boulevard as she was growing up.

I lived with my family in Kew Gardens around 1951, when my father was a Major in the Air Force. We lived in the Curzon Apartments. Coming from Dallas, my mother was surprised to see that the playground was all paved, with no grass. I was fascinated by the trash chute. I may have some pictures hiding in a box. I will look and send copies if I find them. I lived in Hyde Park, NY, north of Poughkeepsie, from 1986 to 1995, when I was Rector of St. James’ Church, Hyde Park. I am back in Dallas now. You can use my email (mwinsor@sbcglobal.net). I found this site using Google. Also, the picture of the house by Ernest Flagg is interesting, because a descendant of his, Peter Flagg Maxson, is one of my best friends. I have sent him a link to this site.

The Kew Gardens Theater

Editor's Note:  Before there was an Austin Theater, there was the Kew Gardens Theater on Queens Boulevard just north of Union Turnpike. It was not open for long. Click on the link below to read a discussion group about the theater's history with links to old photographs of it.

Roger as long as you keep finding pictures from Russell Sage - This is the commencement exercise program June 25, 1957 - at the Loew's Valencia theatre - with the list of all the graduating students. We were the lst full 3 year graduating class. The Loew's Valencia Theatre was the perfect place to have a graduation exercise - it might have been 9:00 AM - but all the STARS were out that day - even the ones on the ceiling - a magnificent sight. I can thank my lucky stars - I made it to the next rung on the education ladder - Look Out Richmond Hill - here I come ready or not. I lived on the South Side of Metropolitan Avenue and that was the boundary line between whether you went to Richmond Hill or Forest Hills High School. I think the neighborhood wished I went to Bunker Hill.
I found some pictures taken outside the Alt-Green Towers after graduation with my mother and father - Anne and Mickey Marks and another picture with Sophie (Soapie - I could'nt pronounce her name) Donovan - John's mother. If my parents could'nt keep me in place sometimes - Sophie did. John send my regards to your mother and hope she is well. The only thing that I did'nt like were her liverwurst sandwiches - and when she made me lunch - you better believe I had to finish it all.
Does anyone know if Omar is still making the graduation gowns or if he decided to stay with Ringling Bros. Roger you're a pattern maker - one size fits all - or was Dumbo the model.
    Good night Kew Gardens

Thought you might enjoy this sign found recently on the Kew Gardens/Richmond hill border. You'd think that they'd have a stencil for 'Avenue'!

WOW! I moved away from the old neighborhood 10 years ago, from New York to sunny South Florida. I 've gone back to the Kew Gardens and I must say that it is truly an honor to say that I was part of that neighorhood. All my memories are great ones, from playing stickball with [name removed by request - Ed.] on his lawn to all the fun at "Night Center" in PS 99. I was even a "line monitor" during lunch time at 99. All the great stickball games at the school yard. Man, great memories. I miss Danny's pizza! I remeber when I saw "Saturday Night Fever" at the Austin Theatre. Man, great memories. I was at 82-40 Austin St, in apt 2F, with the LIRR as my neighbor.
A special thank you for Roger Sabot, the pictures you submitted are great and brought back a lot of memories, I spent many afternoons in that great home.
